Liverpool legend Ian St John dies aged 82

English Premier League giants have confirmed the former club striker Former Ian St John has died aged 82.

The legendary forward who played 425 times for the club, scoring 118 goals made his move to Anfield in 1961 from Motherwell for what was then a club-record fee of £37,500.

In a statement, Liverpool noted: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of a true Anfield legend, Ian St John.

“The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Ian's family and friends at this sad and difficult time. Rest in peace, Ian St John 1938-2021.”

A statement from St John’s family noted: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that after a long illness we have lost a husband, father and grandfather. He passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside.

“We would like to thank all the staff at Arrowe Park Hospital for their hard work and dedication during these very difficult times.”

The striker helped the club earn promotion to the First Division in his first season before leading the Reds to the title in 1964 and 1966, and the FA Cup in 1965.
