Manchester City booked their Champions League quarterfinal slot after a 2-0 (Agg: 4-0) win over Bundesliga side Gladbach in Budapest on Tuesday night.
Pep Guardiola had decided to start the game with no striker with City arriving on a 2-0 aggregate scoreline in the tie following their win in the reverse fixture.
Many had expected the Citizens to dictate play and they did just that with their efforts being rewarded in the 12th minute when Kevin De Bruyne put them into the lead. The Belgian collected a pass from Riyad Mahrez to unleash a terrific shot that beat the Gladbach keeper.
Even before the visitors could know what hit them, City doubled their lead through Iklay Gundogan two minutes later. The German was released by Phil Foden, surging forward to smash a great shot into the top corner after a one on one with the keeper; The goals being the difference at halftime.
The goals were to prove to be the difference in a tie that had one winner written all through even before a ball was kicked.
