🚨 Atalanta 2-2 Manchester United: Ronaldo brace save Solskjaer's blushes

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace as Manchester United were forced to come from down twice to hold Atalanta to a 2-2 draw in a UEFA Champions League game staged on Tuesday night.

Manchester United needed to ease pressure on the chasing pack but didn't do enough in the earlier stages with Ole's formation of playing three center backs looking to have backfired from the inset.

Josip Ilicic to give Atalanta the lead in the early stages after a dreadful error from keeper De Gea in an effort that many thought would have been an easy gather. And if things were not worse for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjer, he was to withdraw defender Raphaël Varane for Mason Greenwood after the Frenchman picked an injury.

But despite their struggles, United restored matters in the dying minutes of the first half through Cristiano Ronaldo who was brilliantly teed up by Portugal international team-mate Bruno Fernandes.

However, United’s defensive issues surfaced again in the second half with Colombian Duván Zapata regaining the host lead after finding space behind Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly. The effort was initially flagged offside, but a VAR review deemed it a genuine goal.

It looked like the English side was beaten until that man Ronaldo popped up again with a magnificent volley from the edge of the box in the 91st minute to register yet another crucial late goal.

The draw sees United tied at the top of the group with Villarreal on seven points after the latter's 2-0 win over Young Boys on the same day.

In other matches of the night, Robert Lewandowski scored a hattrick as Bayern Munich ran 5-2 winners over Benfica in what was coach Julian Nagelsmann's first game in the Allianz Arena dugout since his COVID diagnosis.

Ansu Fati provided the inspiration for Barcelona with a rocket of a half-volley to earn Barcelona a 1-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv in the Ukrainian capital.
