Uruguay stalwart Godin announces Cagliari departure after exclusion

Uruguay stalwart Diego Godin has announced he is leaving Serie A side Cagliari after being excluded from the matchday squad.

The former Atletico Madrid man together with Martin Caceres was excluded from the team ahead of the Juventus game with the duo deciding to leave the club something that is said to have been instigated by the club who wanted them off their wage bill.

"Nothing odd happened. I would like to go into details, but I can not right now. I will not speak until I leave the club, which will obviously happen at this point. It was not a matter of professionalism or lack of respect.

"There are some contractual reasons, and the club has been in a complicated situation for a year. There would be a lot more to say, and maybe I will be able to expound on this down the line," Godin told Radio Sport 890.

Godin said he had lowered his wages as requested by the club but by the look of things they were not happy with his decision as they wanted him out.

“I extended my deal a few weeks ago to do them a solid, spreading things out. But I had already started considering departing in January. We will see what the destination could be. I just want to reiterate that Caceres and I never disrespected our team. There is something more going on,” he added.

The player is said to be keen on staying in Italy even though there are deals that are coming from abroad.
