Sevilla cut Real Madrid's lead at the top of LaLiga standings to five points with a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Cadiz on Monday night.
Lucas Ocampos scored the only goal of the match in the 58th minute in a match they controlled from start to finish.
Sevilla, who were without seven players due to Covid-19 infections, could have taken the lead in the first half but Joan Jordan crashed his strike against the post.
Sevilla also opened up an eight-point gap over Real Betis in third place, with Atletico Madrid another point back in fourth. Barcelona, who won at Real Mallorca on Sunday are fifth.
The race for the title is now becoming tighter after Real Madrid slipped on Saturday at Getafe, going down 1-0.
In another match of the evening, Oihan Sancet scored a hat-trick for Athletic Bilbao as they beat 10-man Osasuna 1-0.
Villarreal were the biggest winners of the night after they smashed last-placed Levante 5-0.
Gerrard Moreno grabbed a brace, with Manu Trigueros, Boulaye Dia and Pau Torres all helping themselves to a goal each.
This was Villarreal's sixth straight win in all competitions, a major improvement after they struggled early on in the season.
