Arsenal will have to manage without Granit Xhaka for their crucial matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool following his dismissal on Thursday night.
After recovering from a bout of COVID-19, the Switzerland skipper returned to the starting XI for his side's EFL Cup semi-final first leg against the Reds.
Xhaka, however, drew his sixth Arsenal red card in all competitions before the 30-minute mark for a boot to the chest on Diogo Jota, who was clear through.
Michael Oliver did not hesitate to brandish a straight red card, which means Xhaka will now face a three-match domestic suspension, beginning with Sunday's North London derby.
The 29-year-old will also miss the Emirates Stadium's second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final next week, and he will serve the remainder of his suspension against Burnley on January 23.
Albert Sambi Lokonga is Arteta's only fit senior midfielder following Xhaka's dismissal, with 18-year-old Charlie Patino serving as an emergency option.
