🏆 AFCON 2021: 'Third final before final' as Salah-led Egypt tackle hosts Cameroon

Egypt will take on Cameroon in the second semi-final match of the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday evening with a final ticket up for grabs.

The Pharaohs are in the hunt for a record eighth AFCON crown, while Cameroon, playing on home soil will be fired up as they chase a sixth title.

Egypt have faced tougher opponents compared to Cameroon, who have had a gentler journey so far.

The north African side saw off Ivory Coast and Morocco in the knockout and quarter-finals respectively, matches Mozambique-born Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz labeled 'finals before final'.

“We overcame the Ivory Coast and Morocco in what amounted to finals before the final and now we face another one against Cameroon,” said the coach ahead of the match.

The indomitable Lions, on the other hand, faced Comoros in the knockout phase, and narrowly won despite the Islanders playing almost the entirety of the match with 10 men and missing a number of their key players. They then saw off The Gambia 2-0 in the quarter-finals in a flat performance.

So, what is there to look forward to?

Salah vs Aboubakar

Vincent Aboubakar has led the Indomitable Lions from the first match and is the tournament's top scorer with six goals.

He has been the leader in the Cameroon team and will be hoping to once again lead his side past a formidable Egypt team.

The Pharaohs will partitiucalry be wary of the striker, who scored a brace in the 2017 final as the Lions came from behind to win 2-1.

Salah, expectedly, has been one of the key men for Egypt, and put on show a man-of-the-match performance against Morocco in the quarters, scoring once and assisting the winner.

  • This will be the 11th Africa Cup of Nations encounter between Egypt and Cameroon, no two teams have met on more occasions in the competition’s history.
  • Egypt have won three of their last four Africa Cup of Nations games against Cameroon (L1), scoring nine goals, this after netting just twice across their previous six encounters against the Indomitable Lions in the competition (W1 D2 L3).

  • Since the beginning of 2017, no player has been directly involved in more goals (9) at the Africa Cup of Nations than Egypt’s Mohamed Salah (six goals, three assists) or Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar (seven goals, two assists).
